Why is dental care important for your pet?
One of our pets most prevalent conditions is dental disease. Many pets have gum disease, dental calculus, as well as abscesses and loose or missing teeth. As your pet eats, food particles will naturally accumulate on and between tooth surfaces. Bacteria in the mouth turns this into plaque. As plaque builds up, the bacteria causes gingivitis, which is an infection of the gums. When plaque hardens, it becomestartar. Periodontal disease is the deeper infection of the teeth and tooth roots, which will result in the loss of the tooth. Dental disease can also cause disease in other organs by releasing bacteria into the bloodstream.
How can you take care of your pet's dental health?
Prevention is the key for any medical condition. We sell toothbrushes and toothpaste as well as dental chews and sprays to assist in the prevention of plaque. Brushing your pets teeth on a routine basis will reduce tartar build-up. Having your pet's teeth checked at annual exams and having dental cleanings performed as needed will ensure dental health.
What are dental cleanings?
A dental cleaning is a routine procedure that is performed while your pet is under anesthesia. As with any surgical procedure, some risk, though minimal, is always involved. Your pet will receive an ultrasonic cleaning of every tooth. Dr. Kleczewski checks every tooth, the gumline, and inside your pet's mouth for any unhealthy teeth or abnormalities. Dr. Kleczewski may determine your pet needs to have a tooth extracted for his or her own health. The dental is completed by polishing all teeth, disinfecting your pet's mouth with a dental spray, and applying a flouride treatment. In addition, your pet will receive a complimentary nail trim. |
